Spiritual Direction

Because God is present and active in every moment of life, we witness the movement between you and God - your Dance of Life.

Spiritual Direction provides safe and brave space for individuals and groups to:

-realize the movement of God within you,

-recognize your movement toward or away from God,

-relate to the world around you with new awareness.

Spiritual direction is the contemplative practice of helping another person or group to awaken to the mystery called God in all of life, and to respond to that discovery in a growing relationship of freedom and commitment. Spiritual direction explores a deeper relationship with the spiritual aspect of being human.  Spiritual direction helps us learn how to live in peace, with compassion, promoting justice, as humble servants of that which lies beyond all names.  Spiritual direction is not psychotherapy, counseling, or theological teaching.
— Spiritual Directors International
Spiritual direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director — the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul.

Individual Spiritual Direction

One person brings the curiosities of life to a Spiritual Director, with the understanding that God is the director of our time together. Together, we hold space for you to discover the movement of God in your life.

I welcome all religious backgrounds and perspectives, and invite you to speak of the Divine in a way that works for you. During a one-hour session, we spend a few moments in silence to release wished for outcomes and open our souls to whatever may show up. One of my Dance of Life Oil Lamps is lit as a recognition of the Invitational Presence between us. I listen to you speak of your desires and longings, resistances and roadblocks, new life and awakenings. I watch for God’s movement in your life, ask questions, and make observations. Together, we hold open space for next steps to become clear for you. We proceed at your pace, always aware of Someone walking with us, beckoning us toward hope and wholeness.

We can meet at my home, 311 Akron Road, Ephrata, PA, or online via Skype, Zoom, FaceTime, Google Duo, Messenger Video, etc. I offer the first session free, so both parties can discern the “fit.” Guidelines and Fees will be discussed at the first visit.

Soul Work with Clay Work: I offer an unique option for Individual Spiritual Direction. We can combine spiritual direction with contemplative experiments with clay: hand building, or on my potter’s wheel. The whole process is one of prayer and openness, noticing how clay invites reflection. Since I do not teach pottery lessons, it is in your best interest to have had a few lessons with clay, but not necessary. As we engage our three centers of knowing (head, heart and movement) God can move in surprising ways.

What you share is held in confidence. I am a mandated reporter, as an ordained pastor and chaplain, and seek to follow the laws in place to keep people safe.

If you have questions about individual spiritual direction, please contact me. I look forward to speaking with you.

Group Spiritual Direction

You may want to join a group of three or four people. We create safe space for each other and learn from each other as we share our spiritual lives. We listen in silence after each person has shared (an event, experience, awareness, relationship, yearning, etc.) to hear or sense words or images from God that may guide the sharer to greater understanding of God’s work. We offer these noticings in a spirit of care for the other.

Please click here to download my guide for group spiritual direction.

Groups can form online, expanding the possibility of meeting with people different from ourselves, and thus, learning more about the movement of God in this world.

If you have questions about group spiritual direction, please contact me. I look forward to speaking with you.

Retreats

  • Contemplative Clay Retreat: “Stepping into a whirling world with a centered heart.” With the use of a Potter’s Wheel, I will create several forms while relating work with clay to work with our souls: centering, opening, growing, shaping, firing. We will pay special attention to noticing what is being birthed in our lives, resistances to that new life, reconciling forces and emerging Surprises. Each person is invited to make a pinch pot with contemplative guidance to take home as a memory. This retreat is appropriate for families, youth groups, church groups, friends, couples, work teams, etc. We can meet in my home, or in your church or retreat venue. The retreat planner covers the logistics (including meals), and opens and closes the retreat. I just provide the input. Contact me to discuss the amount of time I have, and the cost.

  • Retreat in my Home: Occasionally I offer a retreat in my home, open to anyone over age ten, with a delightful mix of people who do not know each other. Discover different perspectives of God, life and our connections to each other. Spend some time outside on our three acre farmette, surrounded by farms that are worked by horses. I plan the logistics, provide a light lunch, and open and close the sessions.
